As a Leadership Coach, I work exclusively in the public and charity sectors, as is reflected in my fee structure. I offer complete confidentiality, active listening so as to fully understand your operating challenges, empathy gained from hard-earned experience at senior public service level and my commitment to a solutions focus

How did I become a coach? Following 38 years operational policing experience in London, mainly of investigation and including at executive level (Deputy Assistant Commissioner), I was appointed Director of Leadership Development for the entire Metropolitan Force to design and implement a cultural change programme.  It was in this context that I initiated an executive coaching project and became a practitioner

On reflection, however, I believe my coaching skills development commenced with being trained and conducting operations for many years in hostage and crisis negotiation. There I learned the importance of emotional intelligence, active listening and the development of trust to achieve peaceful resolution of seemingly intractable operational problems

I was able to draw upon these skills when asked to direct the strategic management of critical incident training for senior police officers in the wake of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, initially for the Met and then for all UK policing and I personally conducted more than 80 such exercises over 10 years. I also applied this learning to leading a command of more than 3000 specialist detectives working on serious and organised crime

Following the Metropolitan Police Authority 'Morris Inquiry' in 2004: ‘Into professional standards and employment matters in the MPS’, I set up a Leadership Academy and designed and led a force-wide working culture change programme: ‘Working together for excellence in leadership’

As an MBTI practitioner and 'Solutions Focus' accredited coach within that programme, I worked with many senior colleagues over the following 5 years, either one-to-one or in the team setting, to identify and implement performance improvement

Since leaving the Met in March 2010, I have qualified as an Insights Discovery® licenced practitioner.  I regularly practice this expertise in collaborative leadership workshops that I have designed and with numerous individual clients. The Insights® management profile provides the best starting point I know for self-awareness and improving personal effectiveness as a leader
